The first direct image of a black hole was captured by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). Using an array of radio telescopes during a 2017 global campaign, astronomers observed the black hole at the centre of Messier 87, a massive galaxy in the nearby Virgo galaxy cluster. Heino Falcke, Chair of the EHT Science Council, and Monika Moscibrodzka, astrophysicist at Radboud University, present the discovery.
