there are two main factors here. Both of them have to do with the relevance of why a temple was built and the Lunar cycle of the woman's body.
Temples are not places of worship. They are not meant to go and do so called puja and ask for things and take Prasad.
Temples were built as ' Yantras ' or tools by which the human energy body could be connected to the cosmic energy body. Now if it is a Laxmi temple then not an idol, rather an elaborate Shree Yantra was put deep in the garbha griha.
