Kerala’s dishonour: Two recent crimes show how trying to socially control women leads to murder
Kerala has been rocked by the horrific “honour killing” of Kevin P Joseph, a Dalit Christian, who fell in love with a higher-born Christian woman. He was allegedly killed by her brother and his friends for daring to transgress his social place.
It so happens that this young woman’s mother was Muslim; so presumably her father’s decision to marry outside the community did not sully his family reputation, but her choice was an injury too great to be borne.

Following the recovery of Kevin’s body, a local DYFI leader (the Democratic Youth Federation of India: DYFI, the youth wing of the the Communist Party of India-Marxist: CPI-M) Ishan was arrested on charges of being involved in the murder. Another DYFI leader Niyaz was arrested this morning in Tamil Nadu along with his accomplice Riyaz.
