धन्वन्तरि हिन्दू धर्म में एक देवता हैं। वे महान चिकित्सक हैं जिन्हें देव पद प्राप्त हुआ। हिन्दू धार्मिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार ये भगवान विष्णु के अवतार समझे जाते हैं। इनका पृथ्वी लोक में अवतरण समुद्र मंथन के समय हुआ था। शरद पूर्णिमा को चंद्रमा, कार्तिक द्वादशी को कामधेनु गाय, त्रयोदशी को धन्वंतरी[4], चतुर्दशी को काली माता और अमावस्या को भगवती लक्ष्मी जी का सागर से प्रादुर्भाव हुआ था। इसीलिये दीपावली के दो दिन पूर्व धनतेरस को भगवान धन्वंतरी का जन्म धनतेरस के रूप में मनाया जाता है। इसी दिन इन्होंने आयुर्वेद का भी प्रादुर्भाव किया था।[5] इन्हें भगवान विष्णु का रूप कहते हैं जिनकी चार भुजायें हैं। उपर की दोंनों भुजाओं में शंख और चक्र धारण किये हुये हैं। जबकि दो अन्य भुजाओं मे से एक में जलूका और औषध तथा दूसरे मे अमृत कलश लिये हुये हैं। इनका प्रिय धातु पीतल माना जाता है। इसीलिये धनतेरस को पीतल आदि के बर्तन खरीदने की परंपरा भी है।[6] इन्हे आयुर्वेद की चिकित्सा करनें वाले वैद्य आरोग्य का देवता कहते हैं। इन्होंने ही अमृतमय औषधियों की खोज की थी। इनके वंश में दिवोदास हुए जिन्होंने 'शल्य चिकित्...
